Reston, VA, named for the community founder and namesake Robert E. Simon, Jr., is a planned community carved from over 6,000 acres of Virginia countryside. It is located in western Fairfax County, Virginia in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Community services are provided by the Reston Association, which is one of the largest community associations in the country. The Association provides a wide range of services and programs designed to ensure high standards of design and maintenance of commercial and residential development within the community, helping to maintain high growth in property values for its residents.
Reston is home to the world headquarters of three Fortune 500 corporations as well as the United States Geological Survey, the National Wildlife Federation, and CNRI. One can get a glimpse of nineteenth century rural Virginia at the Colvin Run Mill. This working 1811 gristmill has several features of interest including the miller’s house, barn and historic post office/gift shop. Public tours are offered daily.
The Reston Zoo is located on the northeast side of town featuring zebras, antelope, bison, ostrich, alligators, camels, goats, a reptile house, and various waterfowl. Thirty acres are dedicated to family-friendly animal interaction with wagon rides and feeding stations.
The Reston Town Center is an outdoor shopping mall with a variety of shops including Ann Taylor, Talbots, Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma. There are also over 20 restaurants, a Hyatt Regency Hotel, a 13-screen movie theatre and an outdoor ice-skating rink during the winter.
Reston is convenient to Washington Dulles International Airport and National Airport. It is served by the Fairfax County School System which is one of the largest school systems in the nation.
