Historical Background

This area was once was a modest changing point for stagecoach horses on the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike. Then, in 1852, the Manassas Gap Railroad reached the area and the stop became known as Gainesville, named for its first postmaster Thomas Gaines.  The town became a shipping point for grain, timber, and cattle and remained a major cattle shipping point into the early 1960’s.

During the Civil War, Thoroughfare Gap in the nearby Bull Run Mountains served as a path for soldiers to reach the First and Second Battles of Manassas. In fact, Manassas Battlefield Park is the site of the Civil War’s first battle.

However, in the 1940s the town was basically a gas station with a few houses and stores.  By the 1970s, metal manufacturing in the area became big business and Gainesville once again flourished and prospered.
