History

Warrenton got its name from General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero.  It was located originally at the junction of Falmouth-Winchester and Alexandria-Culpeper roads, where a trading post known as the Red Store had been established.

At the time of the Revolution a settlement had begun and by 1790 the first courthouse was built.  A jail was erected and an academy named for the General was founded. Then in 1810 the Town of Warrenton was incorporated.

By the 1850's a railroad had reached the town, which by now had several churches, thriving mercantile establishments, a weekly newspaper, and one or two schools.   But for well over a century the town growth was slow and remained primarily a trading center for a rural area and a place of residence for merchants, county officials and professionals.  However, for its size, Warrenton was the richest town in the whole South.

Fauquier County provides area residents with complete educational opportunities from kindergarten through graduate study. Fauquier County's excellent public and private school systems have combined in partnerships with local vocational schools, colleges and universities to ensure that today’s students are prepared to enter the workforce and become community leaders of the future.
